The uninterrupted flow of chi, an electromagnetic energy, in the body is important if we desire radiant health. There are 5 things that drastically affect the flow of chi in the body they are dehydration, refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine.
I have to admit that for many years I drank very little water, consumed large amounts of coffee daily, loaded up the sugar and smoked two packs of cigarettes a day. So I know how challenging it is to change but I also know that once you decide to truly love and support yourself change is easy.
Here's what worked for me. The thought of drinking 7 glasses of water a day was a mountain that I thought I would never be able to climb. First I bought a water filter. Secondly, I made sure that when I left the house in the morning I had five filled bottles (16 ounces a piece) of filtered water in my car. Everywhere I went I took a bottle with me. In no time all, five bottles were consumed by the time I came home. I changed my regular coffee beans for Swiss water process decaffeinated beans and now at the most have one cup of that per day. Instead of sugar I use Stevia; this is an herb that has a sweet earthy taste which helps to regulate blood sugar levels and may be helpful in maintaining proper pancreatic function. I have a glass of wine maybe once a month. As far as cigarettes are concerned, I became a nonsmoker in 1990.
I know most of you have heard how we need to drink water every day but I find with my clients that there is a lot of confusion about exactly how much. A good rule of thumb is to take your weight and divide it by two and that is how many ounces of water you need to drink. So if you weigh 200 lb. then you need to drink 100 ounces of water a day. Clients often say to me when I ask them how much water they drink, "Oh about 2 or 3 glasses per day but I drink coffee, juice and sodas as well...so I get plenty of fluid." Actually, if a liquid is not 80% or more water the body treats it like it is food in the digestive process and pulls water out of the system to aid in the absorption. In fact, for every cup of fluid that is not 80% water the body uses 2 cups to ingest the new fluid. As you can see in the above comment this person is way behind in their daily water consumption.
Let's say based on their weight, a person needs 80 ounces of water (that's 10 glasses). Quite often the response I will get is, "I can't drink that much; what if I drink 6 glasses?" My response to that is, "Any increase is an improvement but let me ask you this, let's say your tires need 26 lb. of air in them, would you put in 16 lb. and think that would be fine?" Of course not!
The adult human body is about 60% water. In babies and young children the percentage is as high as 80%. Water is important for the movement of nutrients in and toxins out of the cells. Water is also the basis of the body's hydraulic system, it keeps the discs inflated, maintains the space between the vertebrae in the spine, helps to lubricate the joints and maintain their integrity. Water is also vital for the transmission of information along the neural pathways (hydroelectric power for thinking and movement, etc.) In fact, the role of water is so important and vital to the function of the body and the flow of chi that the simplest and easiest thing you can do to improve your health is to make sure that you drink enough water and keep your body properly hydrated.
Water is best ingested at room temperature and filtered. If you don't have access to filtered water put a squeeze of lemon in it and let it stand for about 5 minutes before drinking. Also, if you are in a situation where the amount of water you are able to drink is limited, e.g., court reporters, teachers, etc., when you take a mouthful of water let it sit in your mouth for 10 seconds before swallowing, this enables the body to register the input and tag it making sure that the water goes to the areas of greatest need.
