Hair loss in men or women is caused by one or more of the following:
Hormonal imbalance
Mental and emotional stress
Diet or the need for supplementation
In men, loss of hair and baldness is the result of impaired blood circulation in the scalp. Often this is caused by an over abundance of male sex hormones. These hormones cause the galea (a thin sheet-like membrane covering the crown of the head) to thicken. This in turn puts pressure and tension on the capillaries and cuts off the blood supply to the hair follicles. Without the supply of nutrients from the capillaries for hair growth the hair thins and baldness develops.
So I can hear you thinking:
"What about women? They don't have male sex hormones so why are so many women these days experiencing hair thinning problems?"
Well, with the advent of synthetic hormones (birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy) and xenoestrogens (chemicals that mimic hormones) such as petrochemical pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, many women have a developed what is called estrogen dominance. Normally the body's estrogen is balanced by progesterone. However many women do not produce enough progesterone to counter the effects of synthetic estrogen in our water supply, foods and our environment in general.
When a women does not have sufficient progesterone in her body one of the side effects can be hair loss. One of the things that the body uses progesterone for is the production of adrenal hormones that enable us to deal with stress. If progestrone is not readily available the body has a backup plan and manufactures an alternative adrenal hormone which produces male like characteristics causing the scalp to thicken thus leading to hair loss.
If we are experiencing a hormonal imbalance we will also be much more adversely affected by mental and emotional stress in our life. Stress can cause tension in the muscles of the scalp which in turn can contribute to hair loss by constricting the blood vessels. By natural (not synthetic) progesterone supplementation we can restore the hormonal balance in men and women. See our products page for more information.
Diets rich in whole grains, beans, fish, fresh vegetables and fruits provide a rich supply of vitamin B, E, lecithin, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin C and bioflavonoids. These foods provide the essential nutrients to increase blood supply to the skin surface and contribute to capillary health. Eating organically grown foods reduces your exposure to the xenoestrogens mentioned above. In addition, the nutritional content of food is greater when grown organically, for example...organic spinach has 1000% more iron content than inorganic.
And finally, using healthy products on your hair and regularly massaging your scalp are an important part of maintaining a healthy head of hair. Vigorous brushing, finger or vibrator massage of the scalp are extremely important for the healthy state of your hair. Visit the Products page for more information.
